Franz Carl Spitzweg (also Karl Spitzweg; 1808-1885), his creative activity was related to the environment of German bourgeoisie defined as 'Biedermeier'. He has never studied painting and was completely self-taught. In the artistic environment of 19th century he was rather an outsider. Style of his works is today qualified as late Romanticism. In his youth he was also a draftsman. In his works Spitzweg was depicting people from the middle-class. On the small format works he was painting Biedermeier middle-class, strange, alienated characters or romantic events. His paintings reflected people's weakness but no madness or commonness.
